What you might be noticing

Cars almost always give you some warning before they quit. A check engine light. A burning smell after a drive. A grinding sound when you turn into a parking lot. A transmission that hesitates pulling away from a light on Innes Road. An exhaust that suddenly sounds twice as loud. Or just a feeling that the car isn’t driving the way it used to.

Some problems creep up on you. A slow coolant leak, a battery that takes a little longer to crank every morning, a power window that works some days and not others. Others happen all at once, like a belt snapping or a wheel bearing letting go on the highway. Either way, waiting rarely makes the repair cheaper.

Early on, most problems come and go. The light comes on, then clears. The noise only happens when the engine is cold. The car only pulls at highway speed. Give it time and these usually become constant. A slip that only happened under hard acceleration starts happening on every shift. A smell you only noticed on long drives is there at idle. When a symptom stops coming and going, the part behind it has usually worn past the point where you can ignore it.

What we rule out first

Before we tell you a part has failed, we check the simpler causes. A car pulling to one side could be a tire low on air, not a suspension problem. A rough idle could be a loose gas cap or a dirty sensor connection. A warning light might trace back to a corroded ground wire and not the part the code seems to blame.

Cheap and common first, expensive second. Doing it in that order is most of what a fair diagnosis comes down to.

What we actually do

Every repair starts with an inspection. We hook up a Snap-on, Mac or OTC scan tool, read what the car’s computers have stored, and look at the systems those codes point to. Then we confirm it by hand, because a scan tool tells you where to look. It doesn’t always tell you what’s broken.

Once we know, we explain it in plain terms: what’s wrong, why it matters, and what happens if you leave it. You won’t get a pile of jargon. Then you decide.

The systems we repair most often:

  • Engine problems, including misfires, overheating, oil leaks and loss of power
  • Transmission work, from fluid service to internal repairs
  • Electrical faults in starting, charging and accessory circuits
  • Exhaust leaks, mufflers and emissions related problems
  • Wheel and steering repairs
  • Cooling system repairs, including radiators and hoses

When you approve the work, we order the right parts, OEM or OEM equivalent depending on the car and the repair, and get going.

How long it takes

A single part like a sensor, a hose or a starter is often done the same day if the part is in town. Repairs that need a part ordered in, especially for less common vehicles, take longer, and it’s the shipping that slows things down rather than the labour.

Bigger jobs, like transmission work or a full exhaust replacement, take more time on the hoist. We give you a time range once the diagnosis is done, and we call you if anything changes once we’re into it.

If you book online, plan to drop the car off by 9:00am on the day you picked. That gives us the full day with it.

What it depends on

Mostly on how easy the parts are to get for your make and model. It also depends on whether the problem we found is the only one, or whether opening it up shows something related, and on how many cars are ahead of yours that day.

We use OEM or OEM equivalent parts and tell you which before ordering. When we don’t yet know what’s wrong, diagnostic time is $110 per hour. The repair itself gets quoted once we know what it is.

If you already know which system is acting up, our brake repair and car diagnostics pages go into more detail. Regular oil changes are where a lot of engine problems get caught before they turn into repairs.

Common questions

How do I know if my car needs a repair or just maintenance?

If something changed, it's a repair. A warning light, a new noise, a fluid leak or a different feel on the road all count. Maintenance is the scheduled work, like an oil change at a set mileage. If you can't tell which one you're dealing with, bring it in and we'll tell you.

Do you work on all makes and models?

Yes. Domestic and import cars, trucks, SUVs and vans. We use Snap-on, Mac and OTC scan tools, so we can read what your particular vehicle's computers are reporting.

What parts do you use for repairs?

OEM or OEM equivalent parts matched to your vehicle. We tell you which one we're quoting before we order.

Will you tell me the cost before you start?

Yes. We inspect the car, explain what it needs and why, and get your approval before any repair starts. If the cause isn't obvious, diagnostic time is $110 per hour, and we'll tell you that before we begin.

How long will my car be in the shop?

That depends on the job. A sensor or a hose is often done the same day. A transmission repair takes longer, mostly because of parts. Once we know what's wrong, you'll get a real time estimate.

Is it safe to keep driving with a warning light on?

A steady light with no other symptoms is usually fine for a short drive to the shop. A flashing light, a burning smell, smoke, or any sudden change in steering or braking means pull over and call. Don't finish the trip.

What should I check myself before booking a repair?

Check tire pressure, look under the car for fresh drips where you park, and note when a noise happens and how often. Take a photo of whichever dash light is on, since you can attach it when you book online. Don't get under a car that isn't on proper stands, and don't open a hot radiator cap.
