What you might be noticing

A small rock chip on the highway, a star shaped crack near the base of the windshield, or a hairline crack that seems to have appeared out of nowhere overnight. Sometimes it is a side or rear window that will not roll up, or a crack that has grown fast enough that you notice it every time you get in the car.

A lot of these show up after winter driving. Ottawa’s temperature swings between a mild afternoon and a sharp overnight freeze put real stress on glass that already has a weak point. What was a small chip on Monday can be a crack running halfway across the windshield by the weekend.

What we actually do

We start by looking at the damage itself. Size, depth, and where it sits on the glass all matter. A chip away from your direct line of sight, smaller than about two inches, and not on the edge of the windshield, is usually a good candidate for repair. Anything past that point, or damage that touches the edge of the glass where the frame provides structural support, generally needs replacement.

For a repair, we clean out the damaged area and fill it with resin that bonds to the surrounding glass and stops the crack from spreading further. It will not disappear completely, but it stabilizes the glass and keeps you road ready.

For a replacement, we remove the old windshield, prep the frame, and install new glass with proper adhesive, giving it time to cure before the vehicle is driven. We also handle:

  • Chip and crack repair
  • Full windshield replacement
  • Side and rear window issues, including glass that will not operate correctly
  • Related seal and trim work around the new glass

We use quality replacement glass so you are not left with a wavy or distorted windshield that is hard on your eyes at night or in bad weather. A poor quality windshield can create glare and distortion that makes night driving and bad weather harder than they need to be, so the glass itself matters as much as the installation.

If your vehicle has a rain sensor, a heads up display, or a camera mounted near the mirror for driver assistance features, we account for that during replacement so those systems keep working the way they should afterward. Not every vehicle has these, but modern cars increasingly do, and it is worth mentioning if yours does when you book.

How long it takes

A chip repair is typically a same day job, often finished in under an hour once you are in the bay. A full windshield replacement takes longer, mostly because of the adhesive cure time needed before the car can safely go back on the road. We will tell you a realistic pickup time once we know whether the glass is in stock or needs to be ordered.

What it depends on

Whether a repair or a replacement is possible depends entirely on the size, depth, and location of the damage, not on how much you would prefer one over the other. If replacement is needed, the wait can depend on whether the correct glass for your specific make and model is on hand or needs to be ordered in.

A note on Ottawa winters

Auto glass damage does not follow a season, but the growth of that damage does. A chip picked up on the highway in October can sit stable through a mild stretch, then run into a long crack the first hard freeze of the year. Ottawa’s temperature can swing more than twenty degrees between an afternoon and the following morning in late fall and early winter, and that kind of swing is exactly what turns a small, repairable chip into a crack that needs a full replacement.

If you notice a chip, do not wait for the cold to test it. Bringing it in while it is still small gives you the option of a quick repair instead of a full windshield replacement later.

If the glass damage came with a bigger question about your vehicle’s overall condition, a vehicle inspection or a round of car diagnostics can confirm nothing else needs attention. For anything beyond the glass itself, our auto repair page covers the rest of what we handle.

Common questions

Can my windshield be repaired instead of replaced?

Often, yes. A small chip or a short crack outside your direct line of sight can usually be filled and stabilized. A crack in the driver's sightline, damage near the edge of the glass, or a chip larger than about two inches typically needs a full replacement. We will look at it and tell you honestly which applies.

Is it legal to drive with a cracked windshield in Ontario?

Ontario's Highway Traffic Act requires a clear, unobstructed view through the windshield, and a police officer can flag a crack in the driver's sightline as a problem. General terms are the safest way to describe this, since the exact call depends on the size and location of the damage. If you are unsure whether your windshield would pass, bring it in and we will look at it.

Why does a small chip suddenly turn into a long crack?

Temperature swings do it. Windshield glass expands and contracts with heat and cold, and Ottawa goes through big swings in both directions, especially in winter. A chip that sat quietly for weeks can run into a foot long crack overnight once the glass is stressed by a cold snap or a blast of hot defroster air on a frozen windshield.

How long does auto glass work take?

A chip repair is usually finished in under an hour. A full windshield replacement takes longer because the adhesive needs time to cure properly before the vehicle is safe to drive. We will give you a real timeframe once we see the damage and the glass is on order if needed.

Does insurance cover windshield repair or replacement?

Many policies cover glass claims, sometimes without a deductible for a repair rather than a replacement. Check with your insurer directly, since coverage varies by policy.
