Transmission repair in Ottawa

If your transmission slips, shifts hard or takes a second to go into gear, something specific is wrong and it can usually be found. We read the codes, check the fluid and road test the car before we talk about a repair, a rebuild or a replacement.

What you might be noticing

You put it in drive and there’s a pause before it engages. Shifts feel hard, or the transmission hunts between gears. There’s a burning smell after a drive. The car shudders or jerks when it changes gears. You find red fluid under the car after it’s been parked. There’s a clunk underneath when it shifts. The check engine light came on along with any of this.

One of these is worth a look. More than one usually means the fluid or a specific part needs attention soon.

These symptoms build. Early on, a hesitation or a rough shift might only happen once, or only when the car is cold. Leave it, and that hesitation shows up on every shift. Then it starts slipping, where the revs jump and the transmission loses its grip on a gear for a second before it catches. Every slip makes heat and wear, and by the time it’s slipping regularly, the damage inside is usually further along than it feels from the driver’s seat.

What we rule out first

A transmission that shifts hard or hesitates doesn’t always have a problem inside. We check the fluid level and condition first, because low or worn out fluid can cause shifting problems that feel mechanical and cost much less to fix. We also check for codes pointing at a sensor or wiring in the transmission control system before assuming the transmission needs internal work. That order can be the difference between a fluid service and a rebuild.

Why this matters more the longer you wait

A slipping or rough transmission doesn’t heal itself. The parts inside a modern automatic are made to tight tolerances, so driving on a developing problem tends to turn a smaller repair into a rebuild. These transmissions are also computer controlled, so diagnosing them means reading what the transmission control module has stored, not going by feel alone.

What we actually do

  • We connect a scan tool and read any stored transmission or engine codes, since modern transmissions log the fault
  • We check the fluid level, colour and smell, which tells us a lot about how the transmission has been running
  • We look for leaks at the pan, the seals and the cooler lines
  • We road test the car to feel the shifts ourselves and confirm what the codes and fluid are telling us
  • We explain what we found and the real options, whether that’s a fluid service, a repair, a rebuild or a replacement, before any work starts

Routine transmission service

If you’re coming in for maintenance and not a problem, here’s what the service involves. We drain the old fluid, drop and inspect the pan, clean or replace the filter, fit a new pan gasket, and refill with fresh fluid. Done at the right interval, it’s one of the better ways to avoid a big repair later.

How long it takes

The diagnosis and fluid check usually happen early in the visit. A fluid and filter service is typically a same day job. A repair can take a day or more depending on parts, and a rebuild or replacement takes longer still, since there’s more labour and the parts are often special order. We’ll give you a real timeline once we know what the transmission needs.

Drop the car off by 9:00am on the day you book, so there’s time for a proper road test.

What it depends on

The right fix depends on the make, the type of transmission, how far the wear has gone, and what parts are available. We use OEM or OEM equivalent parts, and we go through repair versus rebuild versus replacement with the findings in front of you. Making that call without a diagnosis rarely works out well for you.

When we don’t know yet what’s wrong, diagnostic time is $110 per hour.

Ottawa’s temperature swings play a part too. Transmission fluid thickens in the cold, so shifts can feel hard or slow on a January cold start and then go back to normal once the fluid warms up. That’s why we ask when the problem happens, since cold only versus all the time points at different causes. Stop and go driving through Orleans or along Innes Road also puts a transmission through more shifts per kilometre than highway driving, which is one more reason regular fluid service matters here.

Common questions

How do I know if it is the transmission and not something else?

Delayed or hard shifts, slipping between gears, a burning smell, or red fluid under the car are the clearest signs. On newer cars a check engine light can point at the transmission too. We confirm with a scan and a look at the fluid before calling it a transmission problem.

What does transmission fluid condition tell you?

Quite a bit. Fresh automatic transmission fluid is usually clear red. Cloudy, dark or burnt smelling fluid tells us the transmission has been running hot or has gone too long without service, and gives us a sense of how far the wear has gone.

Is it cheaper to repair or replace a transmission?

It depends on what's wrong, which is why we diagnose before quoting either. A fluid and filter service or a single part costs far less than a rebuild or replacement, so we start with the smallest fix that will actually solve it.

Can I prevent transmission problems with regular maintenance?

Yes. Fresh fluid, a clean filter and a new pan gasket at the right interval is one of the best ways to avoid a big transmission bill later. If you wait until it slips or shifts hard, the fluid has usually been overdue for a while.

Do you work on both automatic and manual transmissions, all makes?

Yes, domestic and import, all makes and models.

Is it safe to keep driving if the transmission is slipping?

Not for long. Every slip creates heat and wear. One mild slip is usually fine for a short drive to the shop, but repeated slipping is urgent, because driving on it tends to turn a repairable problem into a rebuild.

What can I check myself before booking?

If your car has a transmission dipstick, check the fluid the way your owner's manual describes, usually warm, running, in park and on level ground. Clear red is good. Dark, cloudy or burnt smelling fluid is worth mentioning when you book. Many newer cars have no dipstick you can reach, and if yours doesn't, leave it to us.
