Engine oil being drained during a service at On The Run Auto Care

Oil change in Ottawa

An oil change here means new oil to your manufacturer's spec, a new filter, fluid top ups and a look over the engine while the car is up on the hoist. A synthetic oil change starts at $120, and the final price depends on your car and how much oil it takes.

What you might be noticing

Usually nothing. Most people book an oil change because the kilometres are coming up on the interval, or a light or a sticker says it’s due. A few signs mean it’s gone too long, though. The engine sounds louder than usual, the oil on the dipstick is black and gritty, or there’s a burning oil smell that wasn’t there before.

If the car is due and nothing feels off yet, that’s the best time to book. The whole point is to get to it before anything shows up.

Old oil goes downhill in steps. First it darkens and thins a little. It’s still protecting the engine, just not as well. Leave it longer and it gets thick and gritty from metal particles and combustion byproducts, and that’s when wear inside the engine really picks up. By the time you can hear it or smell it, the change was due a while ago.

What to check yourself before booking

Park on level ground and let the engine cool. Pull the dipstick, wipe it, push it all the way back in, then pull it again and read the level and colour. Amber or honey coloured oil is healthy. Black, gritty or low oil means book now. Also look where you usually park for fresh spots, since a leak often shows up on the driveway before it shows up as a warning light.

Ottawa driving and your oil

Cold starts are tough on oil. When it’s cold, oil thickens and takes longer to reach every part of the engine, so the first minute or two on a January morning in Orleans or Gloucester causes more wear than a long, steady stretch on the highway. Add short trips and stop and go traffic around the city, and an Ottawa winter can use up an interval faster than the same kilometres would somewhere milder.

What we actually do

We drain the old oil, put on a new filter, and refill with the right oil for your engine. While the car is up, we check the air filter, top up any fluids that are low, and look over the engine bay for leaks, worn belts or anything else that looks off.

When we’re done, we reset your service reminder so the car tracks the next one properly.

Every visit includes:

  • New oil and oil filter
  • Air filter check
  • Fluid top ups
  • Visual engine inspection
  • Service reminder reset

If we spot something else, like a belt starting to crack or a fluid that’s lower than it should be, we tell you and you decide what happens next. We don’t add work you haven’t approved.

How long it takes

This is one of the quicker jobs we do. Book a day online, drop the car off by 9:00am, and it’s usually ready the same day. If the inspection turns up something that needs attention, we call you before doing anything else, and that might mean a longer visit or a separate appointment.

What it depends on

How often you need fresh oil depends on your engine, how you drive, and what your manufacturer recommends. Short trips, cold winters and stop and go traffic are harder on oil than steady highway driving, so a shorter interval often makes sense in Ottawa.

Price depends on the car too. A synthetic oil change starts at $120, and engines that take more oil cost more. You’ll see the number before we start.

A routine visit is a good time to catch other problems early, which is what the visual inspection is for. If something comes up, our car diagnostics page explains how we dig further. For anything bigger, see auto repair, and if your brakes are due for a look too, see brake repair.

Common questions

How do I know when I need an oil change?

If your car has an oil life monitor, go by that. If not, follow your manufacturer's interval in kilometres or months, whichever comes first, and check the dipstick now and then. Dark, thick oil means it's due.

What is included in an oil change here?

New oil and a new oil filter, an air filter check, top ups on other fluids, a visual check of the engine, and a reset of your service reminder if the car has one.

How much does an oil change cost?

A synthetic oil change starts at $120. The final price depends on your car and how much oil the engine takes, and we tell you the number before we start.

What kind of oil do you use?

Whatever your engine calls for. We go by the grade and spec your manufacturer lists for your engine.

How long does an oil change take?

The job itself doesn't take long. Book online, drop the car off by 9:00am, and it's normally ready the same day. It can take longer if the inspection turns up something worth talking about.

What can I check myself between visits?

Check the oil level and colour on the dipstick when the engine is cold, and look for spots where you park. Both take a minute and tell you whether your next visit should come sooner.

Does short trip driving really wear out oil faster?

Yes. On short trips the engine never stays hot long enough to burn off the moisture and fuel that end up in the oil, and a lot of winter driving around Ottawa is exactly that. If most of your trips are under fifteen minutes, your oil is working harder than the number on the windshield sticker assumes.
